About
Leicestershire Dyslexia Association (LDA)
The LDA aims to give help and support to people of all ages who have dyslexia and to parents, teachers, and employers also.
The LDA was set up in 1985 as the Dyslexia Support Group Leicester, by a small group of parents with dyslexic children or young people, who needed more support than was available in the schools. The name was changed to Leicestershire Dyslexia Association in 1994.
The Teaching Workshop was started in 1987, by two specialist trained teachers. The three original pupils soon became ten and from then on there was always a waiting list. Many of the past pupils have done very well at school and college and several have university degrees or have excelled in other walks of life.
The workshop has been through many changes during the last 35 years and the main problem has always been finding teachers and helpers who were willing to work for expenses only on a Saturday. At present we have nine students working for an hour or 1.5 hours with 5 tutors. The workshop offers tuition in reading, spelling, handwriting, study skills and IT, using methods suitable for dyslexic young people. The fees are kept low because of the dedication and goodwill of our tutors.
Places are limited but it is worth putting your young person’s name down on the waiting list. If you would be interested in volunteering at the workshop please do get in touch; guidance and training will be available.
Please contact the Teaching coordinator on: fionah@ldadyslexia.org.uk or phone 0116 2415153.
The LDA helplines are run by volunteers who have personal and/or professional experience of Dyslexic issues. They can give information on identification and screening, assessment, specialist teaching and support available in schools.
